A motorcyclist was seriously injured in Cameron on Wednesday evening after striking a deer. The single-vehicle crash happened in the 500 block of Shaw Road just before 8 p.m.
A witness at the scene said he was in his garage when he heard the motorcycle coming down the road, followed by the sound of the crash. He ran out and found the rider sitting up in the middle of the road, seriously injured but alert and talking, and immediately called 911.
Once emergency units arrived, Shaw Road was completely shut down so crews could safely work the scene and render aid to the patient.
The Honda motorcycle sustained moderate damage in the crash and was taken to a nearby mechanic shop, where the man had just left after visiting with shop personnel.
The man was transported to a landing zone set up in the student parking lot of Union Pines High School and airlifted to a trauma center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The deer struck in the crash died and was moved out of the roadway.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to investigate the crash.
Responding units included Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, and N.C. Highway Patrol. Carthage Fire Department assisted with the landing zone.
