Two dead after shooting in Jackson Hamlet community

Two men were found shot to death late Sunday night in the Jackson Hamlet area outside Pinehurst.

Law enforcement responded shortly before 9:30 p.m. to a report of shots fired on Gaines Street near N.C. Highway 5 in the Jackson Hamlet community.

When deputies arrived, they found two male victims in a yard. Both had been shot and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities maintained a heavy presence in the area as the investigation proceeded. Law enforcement officers could be seen using police K-9s in a nearby wooded area.

On Monday morning, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release providing an update on the case.

“Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office have identified a person of interest in connection with this incident,” reads the release. “Based on the preliminary investigation, this does not appear to be a random act of violence, and it is believed the individual involved was known to the victims.”

According to a press release issued Tuesday afternoon, the victims have been identified as Jamar Brooks Hailey, 43, of Aberdeen, and Antonio Jamal Brown, 41, of Raeford.

The department also added that it has identified a person of interest but has not specified anything about this person.

“The individual identified by investigators as a person of interest in this investigation has not yet been located and, as such, remains a person of interest,” reads the release. “This remains a very active investigation, with a continued strong presence of Sheriff’s Office investigators in the Jackson Hamlet community.”

The investigation remains ongoing, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
