A third serious crash Tuesday in Moore County sent two people to the hospital and shut down a major highway for the third time in less than a week. The two-vehicle collision happened in the 4000 block of Highway 15-501 in Carthage, south of Pete’s Family Restaurant, just before 7 p.m.
A Honda Accord traveling southbound crossed the centerline into the path of a Toyota 4Runner traveling northbound. The Toyota was struck on the driver’s side rear, causing the SUV to flip over and come to a stop on its roof just off the shoulder of the road. The rear wheel was ripped off of the vehicle in the crash.
The Honda slammed on its brakes and skidded for a lengthy distance before leaving the road and crashing into a tree down an embankment. Both cars sustained extensive damage.
Both drivers were transported to Moore Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A crash less than 3 miles south of this one claimed the life of a man this morning.
Highway 15-501 was shut down for about an hour while crews worked the scene and removed the vehicles. The Carthage Police Department was on the scene investigating the crash.
Responding units included the Carthage Fire Department, Carthage Police Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, and Moore County Public Safety. Rockwell Towing arrived on the scene to safely tow the Toyota 4Runner from the site.
