Never a dill moment: Brooklyn Pickle picks the Pines

Plenty of “big” things are on the horizon for Moore County, including giant subs and sandwiches at New York eatery Brooklyn Pickle. Opening its doors later this summer, owner and company president Craig Kowadla is excited to bring Brooklyn Pickle to Southern Pines and hopes everyone will relish having a little taste of New York at home in the Sandhills.

This location will mark the first time Brooklyn Pickle has breached New York state borders. While all four other sites are in Brooklyn Pickle’s home state, the new Southern Pines location will be the first in North Carolina and the first out of state.

Kowadla’s motive for bringing Brooklyn Pickle to Moore County is clear: “I want to move here!” he explained between laughs. “I love it. I love the weather. I love golf. I love the people. I can’t find anything wrong with it. I think it’s a great place to be.”

In its home state, Brooklyn Pickle is known for “giant overstuffed deli sandwiches, huge subs, award-winning homemade soups, convenient catering, and a fun, friendly, fast-paced atmosphere.”

With his future neighbors in mind, Kowadla is planning minor adjustments to the restaurant’s menu. While a few items will be removed and others will be substituted for new dishes, Kowadla is most excited about adding beer to the eatery’s menu, which will be a new North Carolina exclusive.

In addition to an indoor dining area, the new location will offer plenty of outdoor seating. “There will be a big patio,” said Kowadla, a fan of North Carolina’s warm weather. “There will be even more seating outside than there is inside, which will be nice.”

Don’t want to dine in? No big dill. Pickup and takeout orders will also be available for diners who wish to grab their food and go, and the menu will be available to review online.

Kowadla recommends first-timers try the Brooklyn Pickle Special Sub, a signature giant sub with corned beef, pastrami, and Russian and Swiss cheeses on dark rye bread. However, potential customers are encouraged to thoroughly peruse the menu, as there are plenty of giant subs, sandwiches, salads, soups, and wraps to choose from.

“We’re excited to be in North Carolina,” said Kowadla. “We can’t wait to serve a big sandwich with quick service and a smile on our face.”

The building itself will be entirely brand-new; a new addition to Morganton Park South, sharing a plaza with Lowes Foods, Pizza Hut, and Pet Supermarket. The new building will also house a new UPS store on the opposite side of Brooklyn Pickle, said Kowadla.

With things on track and going smoothly, Brooklyn Pickle is anticipated to open early to midsummer, with an estimated opening in June or July. The address is 1788 Old Morganton Road, Southern Pines.
