Ellen Clark Woodard, 98, of Southern Pines, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 13, 2026, at St. Joseph of the Pines following a brief illness.
Born on June 18, 1928, in Everetts, North Carolina, Ellen was the last surviving child of the late Lee Andrew Clark Sr. and Essie Woolard Clark. Raised in the close-knit farming community of Martin County, she carried throughout her life the values of faith, hard work, kindness, and devotion to family that shaped her early years.
In 1951, Ellen married Joseph Raymond Woodard. During Dr. Woodard’s distinguished career as a professor at North Carolina State University, the couple made their home in Raleigh. Following their retirement in 1985, they moved to the Sandhills and later settled in Southern Pines, where they enjoyed many wonderful years together. Ellen was a devoted wife who lovingly cared for her husband throughout his life.
Ellen enjoyed a fulfilling career as an elementary school teacher, where she taught and cared for countless children during their formative years. She and her husband were also faithful members of The Village Chapel in Pinehurst.
In addition to her parents, Ellen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Joseph Raymond Woodard; and her siblings, Grace Hollar, Florine Everett, Dr. Lee Clark, Robert Clark, and Dr. Daniel Clark.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
A private funeral service was held at the Chapel of Pinelawn Memorial Park.
