Obituary for Hattie Lucille Simonson

Hattie Lucille Simonson, daughter of the late Walter and Pearl Capers was born in Sumter, SC on August 12, 1922.  She transitioned into the resting arms of God on August 26, 2020.

She graduated from Walleigh High School and Washington Business School, both located in New York.  She worked for Hartman Fuel Company for 20 years until retirement in 1989.  She also was employed by the NYC Board of Education as a bookkeeper for the school lunch program.

Hattie was married to Edward Simonson and through this union 2 children were born, Claudette and Mark.
She was a devoted member of Tremont United Methodist Church (Bronx, NY) where she served on many, many boards for over 25 years. To mention a few: Church Lay Leader, Treasurer, Secretary and Sunday School Teacher.  Happiness to her is to know that so many of the young people whose lives she touched are now working for the glory of God.  Throughout her years she has proven to be a faithful and ardent church worker who gave generously and unselfishly of her time.

In 1998 Hattie relocated to North Carolina to be closer to her family.  She attended various churches until she decided to join Mt. Olive AME Zion Church where she became a devoted member until her eternal rest.  She was affectionately known as “Ms. Hattie”.

Ms. Hattie was a warm, soft spoken woman with tremendous strength, who because of her faith and positive attitude, always had a kind word to say.  Her spirit allowed her to be a good listener and counselor.  Throughout her years, she “never met a stranger”.

Ms. Hattie leaves to cherish her memory a loving daughter Claudette Dowdy ( Milton), a devoted son Mark Simonson (Deborah), 3 grandsons Jermaine Dowdy ( Esmeralda), Jason Dowdy (Marina), Mark Simonson, Jr. (Jasmine), 10 great-grandchildren Ronnie, Khalil, Karina, Kaydance, Kayjhon, Antione, Keri, Jordan, Jada and Khari.  Special cousins, Frankie, Shirley, Gene, Mable, Ernestine, Mamie and Freddie along with a host of other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held on Friday, August 28, from 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm in the chapel of Pugh & Smith Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, August 29 at 11 am in the Mt. Olive AME Zion Church Cemetery.
