Virginia Winters Oliver, 94, of Pinehurst, entered fully into the presence of her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 24 at St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center. Born in Leslie, AK, she was raised in Mississippi.

She and her husband, John S. Oliver, served as Southern Baptist Missionaries to Brazil. Her husband was killed in a plane crash in 1957 while on the mission field where he was a pilot/evangelist. Virginia returned to the United States and after two years felt God’s call on her life to return to Brazil where she served for 41 years, raising three girls as a single mother before being a “single mom” was a word.

Retiring to Southern Pines, she continued speaking about her mission work and volunteering in the local church and community.

She is survived by her three daughters: Alices Lages (Norton) of Manaus, Brazil; Anna Stevens (Archie) of Pinehurst, NC, and Rebecca Poole (Grady) of Colbert, GA; six grandchildren – Vivian Lages of Southern Pines, Winston Lages (Alessandra) of Manaus, Brazil, Robert Lages (Giselle) of Arapongas, Brazil, Andrew Stevens (Melina) of Nashville, TN, Josh Poole (Amanda) of Danielsville, GA, Ashley McCants (Aaron) of Athens, GA, and 10 great-grandchildren, and her brother, Buddy Winters (Frances) of Greenwood, SC.

A service to celebrate Virginia’s life will be held on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at 11:00 am at Beulah Hill Baptist Church, 7400 Beulah Hill Church Road, West End, NC with Rev. Darrell Williams and Rev. Archie Stevens officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall.
