Geraldine Pote Tobias (nee Youngblood), 87, died at home on January 7, 2017. Born September 1, 1930 in Newburgh, Indiana, “Gerry” lived in Newburgh and Evansville, Indiana before attending Oberlin College to study and pursue a life-long love of music. Gerry graduated from Oberlin College in 1952 and married Edward S. Tobias. They moved to Wadsworth, Ohio and started a family before returning to Oberlin where Gerry taught music in the Oberlin and Elyria public schools and Lake Ridge Academy. The Tobiases retired to Southern Pines, North Carolina to enjoy music, golf, and warm winters.
Gerry is survived by daughters Sara Reich (Armond), Virginia Beach, Virginia, Martha Stock (Jeffrey), Elyria , Ohio, and Emily Tobias (Trey Thurman), Southern Pines, North Carolina, grandchildren Stephen Greszler, Cristina Ustaris (Jason), Aliya Reich, Craig Greszler (Nikkie), Melanie Stock and great-grandchildren Kyla and Evan Ustaris. She was preceded in death by husband of 52 years, Edward, and son, Stephen.
A memorial celebration will be held at Community Congregational Church, 141 N Bennett St., Southern Pines, NC on January 27, 2018 at 11:00 am. An internment ceremony will take place at Westwood Cemetery in Oberlin, Ohio, at a later date. Memorial funds have been established in Gerry’s name at Community Congregational Church, 141 N Bennett, Southern Pines, NC, 28387 and WCPE Education Fund, PO Box 897, Wake Forest, NC 27588.
