One person killed, dog injured in crash

A local woman was killed, and her dog was injured after crashing head-on into a tree on Highway 690 near Morrison Bridge Road outside of Vass on Monday night.

First responders were dispatched to the single-vehicle crash shortly after 6 p.m. The driver of a pickup truck was declared dead at the scene, and a dog in the back seat was injured. N.C. State Highway Patrol later identified the victim as Christina Parton, 36, of West End.

According to N.C. Highway Troopers investigating the crash, the woman veered off the right side of the road and into a tree head-on. They believe speed and alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Moore County Animal Services responded to the scene to assist with the dog, however, a family friend came and took the animal to an emergency vet. According to Crains Creek Fire Department, the dog suffered from a dislocated elbow and is expected to be ok.

The highway was shut down for approximately two hours while first responders worked the scene.
