The first day of high school can be an anxiety producing event for most Freshman. New buildings, hundreds of new faces, new teachers and new procedures, especially at a high school with over 2100 students. Pinecrest High School established Freshman Orientation Night to help alleviate some of this anxiety.

Orientation for incoming Freshmen will take place on Wednesday August 22 from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Pinecrest Auditorium.

“At a large high school like Pinecrest, it makes sense to hold our Freshman Orientation on different dates than our registration and general open house”, explained Beth VonCannon, Pinecrest PTSA President,” this ensures that Freshman and their parents get extra attention, get their questions answered, get a chance to meet their teachers and learn the layout of the school.”

The hour and a half Orientation program will start in the school auditorium with an introduction from school counselors and administrators. Then the students will take tours of the campus led by upper classmen. The parents will stay in the auditorium for a program geared to answer their specific questions.

Student2Student Club members will be leading the campus tours. For most Freshmen students this will be their first time walking around the Pinecrest campus so the tours are an important way to increase their comfort level before their first day on campus and a chance to get the scoop on the campus from existing students.

Topics that will be covered during the Orientation program include school graduation requirements, grading system, drop off and pick up procedures, dress code, fees, lockers and other important topics. There will also be a Question and Answer period for parents following the formal presentations.

After the tours and presentations, the parents and students can gather information on the numerous clubs and sports available for the students at Pinecrest. The PTSA will also be providing refreshments for those who attend.

“Tables for various clubs and sports will be set up in front of the auditorium, or in the cafeteria in case of rain, so that the new students can meet the club members, learn about the clubs and sports, and sign –up for those clubs that are of interest to them,” added VonCannon, “In addition, parents can sign up for the PTSA and even participate in a gift card raffle for new members.”

Military and New Student Orientation will take place Thursday August 23 at 4:30 p.m. The Back to School Night for Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors will be held Thursday August 23, 2016 from 6-7:30 p.m.
