Police warn of scam that threatens to leak sensitive photos, information

The Pinehurst Police Department has received several complaints about an extortion attempt involving sensitive photos and personal information of a victim. The perpetrator has threatened to release these materials unless a substantial sum of money is paid, said the Pinehurst Police Department on Facebook.

The victims received mail containing threatening messages demanding payment in exchange for the nondisclosure of the sensitive content. The extortionist has claimed to possess compromising photos and personal information, which they have threatened to distribute publicly if their demands are not met.

Law enforcement is urging anyone with information about this incident to come forward or report it to the Pinehurst Police Department Tip Line at 910-420-1654. They also advise the public to be vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activities to the authorities.

The department offers the following safety tips regarding the current scam:

*Do not engage with extortionist or comply with their demands

*Preserve all communication and evidence related to the threat

*Report the incident to the police, especially if payment was made
