A death investigation began Friday after a 7 a.m. roadside passerby reported an incident in Cameron.
Officials blocked access roads while 12 law enforcement persons responded to the ongoing investigation.
“Moore County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a motorist inside a vehicle on the shoulder of Highway 24-27 with an apparent gunshot wound,” said Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields in a news release.
Authorities identified the man as 44-year-old Jonathan Batten of Sanford. Batten was deceased when deputies arrived on the scene.
“Although the investigation is ongoing, evidence at this point suggests that the incident on Highway 24-27 was self-inflicted,” said Fields.
