September is National Recovery Month, and its focus is to educate Americans about those dealing with addiction and mental health disorders. The goal is to help everyone in living a healthy and rewarding life.
Drug Free Moore County is bringing awareness to those who are struggling with recovery and celebrating those who are in active recovery by hosting its first ever Run for Recovery, according to Executive Director, Karen Wicker.
Drug Free Moore County is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization comprised of concerned citizens and community agencies that include medical, mental health, education, and law enforcement representatives.
The mission of Drug Free Moore County is to increase awareness, disseminate information, and garner support in order to facilitate the prevention, intervention, and treatment of substance abuse in Moore County, NC.
The Run for Recovery will be on Saturday, September 23rd from 7:30 am to 12:00 pm. This event will be held at the National Athletic Village in Southern Pines. There will be a run available for those professional runners, a fun walk/run for the amateurs, and an obstacle course for the 4 member teams with a zest for challenge.
The Run for Recovery is a fundraiser to raise money to establish Community Recovery Centers and train certified peer counselors to be available in the county to help support those going through recovery and their families.
“Community Recovery Centers are not large institutional center, but sometimes a room in an existing building or establishment that folks who are on the journey of recovery can come to talk to others who may be on their own recovery journey,” Wicker said. “Certified Peer Counselors are people in active recovery who have been trained to provide one on one support to others.”
Community Recovery Centers do not take the place of treatment but are instead places of support and acceptance for people in recovery. “In some communities, the center will host speakers to come talk about job opportunities or housing options,” Wicker said. “They can also provide information and support to the family members of those in recovery. These centers help to support a healthy and lasting recovery.”
Drug Free Moore County would like to initially establish at least two centers or places in the Carthage and Northern Moore area, where there are no treatment services available. Monies raised through the Run for Recovery will help in establishing these sites.
