Moore County Sheriff’s Office is urging pet owners and others to beware Thursday after a case of rabies was confirmed in the Westmoore area of the county on Highway 705, near Adams Road.
On August 9, a child was bitten and scratched by a cat. When Moore County Sheriff’s Office captured the feral cat “it began to exhibit signs of distress and quickly expired,” said the sheriff’s department in a statement.
The deceased cat tested positive for rabies.
“Sheriff Fields urges citizens to be vigilant in the protection of their own pets in this area of the county,” said the statement. “If anyone sees any animals that exhibit suspicious behavior in the Westmoore area, please contact Moore County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services at (910) 947-2858.”
