Southern Pines announces discharge of untreated wastewater

The Town of Southern Pines recently released its annual water quality report for 2023, which noted safe drinking water without any violations of contaminant levels.

Southern Pines routinely monitors its drinking water for over 100 contaminants. Some include turbidity, a measure of cloudiness that is a good indicator of filter system effectiveness; fluoride, a water additive that promotes strong teeth; copper and lead, which are caused by corrosion of household plumbing systems and erosion of natural deposits; and chlorine, a water additive that controls microbes.

The Southern Pines water system has over 11,000 connections providing water to more than 40,000 people using 247 miles of water lines. The Southern Pines water treatment plant is located in Pinebluff, and water is pumped from Drowning Creek, which is in southern Moore County, near the Richmond County line.

The plant can treat up to eight million gallons per day (MGD), pumping the treated water to elevated storage tanks. In 2023, the Town treated an average of 3.39 MGD and reached a high of 6.48 MGD on July 31.
