Suspicious car parked near woods results in two arrests

A suspicious car parked near woods in Cameron resulted in two individuals being arrested on drug charges.

“On February 22nd, 2024, detectives with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office were patrolling in the 5000 block of NC Highway 24/27 in the Cameron area of Moore County,” said Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields in a statement issued to Sandhills Sentinel. “While in the area, detectives observed a vehicle parked off the roadway in the wood line, so an investigation commenced.”

During the investigation, detectives found suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, and drug paraphernalia.

James Castagna, 51, of Holly Springs, was arrested on charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of schedule II-controlled substance, maintaining a vehicle, dwelling, or place to keep a controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Castagna was committed to the Moore County Detention Center under a $35,000 secured bond.

Morgan Powell, 31, of Cameron, was arrested on charges of possession with intent to sell and deliver of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine, felony possession of schedule II-controlled substance, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Powell was on active probation at the time of arrest for possession of scheduled substances. Powell was committed to the Moore County Detention Center under a 48-hour hold due to the recently enacted HB813.

Both suspects are due in court on March 20 and are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
