Town staff honored with service awards

Contractors have clearance to work on Saturdays in Southern Pines.

The green light for Saturday work was given by the Southern Pines Town Council at its Tuesday, April 14 session, which, because of the current health crisis, took place virtually. Under the amendment to the Town Code of Ordinances, construction can take place on Saturdays between the hours of 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

A concerned citizen, citing a desire to keep Saturdays free from sounds associated with building and preserve the quality of life, expressed her reservations during the meeting. After the council stated that the change makes things no different in Southern Pines than in surrounding communities, the caller said decisions shouldn’t be based on what other municipalities are doing.

The council appreciated and considered the input, but felt it necessary to pass the measure.

“People have been constructing on Saturdays for quite some time,” Reagan Parsons, who serves as town manager for Southern Pines, said.

Parsons also made it clear that no inspections will take place on weekends.

“The building industry understands,” he said. “I don’t expect that to be an issue.”

Mayor Carol R. Haney, specifically, saluted the caller for getting involved.

“You certainly do your research,” Haney said. “You definitely are an engaged citizen.”

With that being said, Haney praised the way the amendment was worded.

“It’s very clear as to what you can and cannot do,” she said.

Additionally, Haney commented that businesses are not alone when it comes to noise on weekends.

“Homeowners can make all the noise they want on Saturdays,” she said. “We make more noise than probably the contractors.”

While the amendment is on the books, the council was quick to mention that a debate may continue.

“This can be altered,” Haney said. “Nothing is permanent except change.”

As far as having to meet via computer, the council is resigned to the adjustment.

“This is becoming our normal way to meet,” Haney said.
