Wrong-way driver causes accident on U.S.1

Three people escaped serious injuries after a near head-on collision shut down two lanes of U.S. Highway1 between Youngs Road and Valley View Road near Southern Pines on Sunday.

Emergency units were dispatched to the accident around 5:30 p.m. They arrived on the scene to find a Lincoln MKZ passenger car just off the roadway on the northbound side, and a Nissan Murano in the median.

Both vehicles had heavy driver-side damage. The impact also ripped the front driver-side wheel off of both vehicles.

A moped was traveling northbound and came upon the accident as it happened and struck some debris causing the female rider to crash on the side of the road.

According to officials on scene, the Lincoln was traveling south in the northbound lane when it nearly hit the Nissan head-on causing the accident.

The male driver of the Lincoln was transported to Moore Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both the male driver of the Nissan and driver of the moped were uninjured.

One lane of each side of Highway 1 was shut down for a brief period while crews worked the scene.
N.C. State Highway Patrol was on the scene investigating the accident.

Responding to the scene were Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Southern Pines Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Office and N.C. State Highway Patrol.
