Dewberry Inn Bed and Breakfast proposal celebrates Victorian era

A proposed bed-and-breakfast is likely to open soon in the historic downtown area of Cameron. Elizabeth Nhambure’s venture has an expected completion date of Feb. 29.

Cameron’s planning board reviewed her application in January and will discuss a special use permit on Jan. 9, and the commissioners will vote in February. According to the ordinances of permitted uses provided by request only from the town clerk, Nhambure has met the requirements.

Three upstairs bedrooms, one with a private bathroom, serve as the guest rooms in the historic Muse House with a French provincial theme.

“Every piece has a story,” Nhambure said about selecting the furniture.

Nhambure moved into the Victorian-era home in January 2023, and in her March 2023 interview with Sandhills Sentinel said it was a dream come true.

Downtown Cameron features cedar trees lining sidewalks to the churches, antique shops and The Dewberry Café, which opens in late February.

Guests can peer through the wavy glass windows and feel the 1800s ambiance as the neighboring vintage dwellings come into focus.

Balconies offer fresh air and unobstructed views of downtown, where not much has changed.

“When people come in the door, they will feel they are home and, unlike traditional bed-and-breakfasts, I will offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner, in a farm-to-fork style,” Nhambure said. “I will sell local products, including muscadine grape juice and lavender products.”

Nhambure’s venture is open for rehab stays and respite stays for overworked executives. Adult clients are always welcome, and because of the thin walls, children are not.

Clients with support dogs must provide verification.

Looking for an event venue? Paying guests may use the spacious living room with antique furniture. Bridal showers, Bible retreats, and reunions are always welcome but must respect the maximum of six persons.

The pricing schedule relies on the original model for bed-and-breakfasts, based on pay per person. The base is $150 per person, and that includes all meals served in the common dining area.

Nhambure will design meals around client’s food sensitivities and that area gardeners and farmers offer pick-your-own. She believes in sourcing locally.

Decades of old-growth bamboo line the backyards. Nhambure designed a useful product to sell online and enjoy on the property—bamboo terraces.
