A driver involved in a traffic accident fled the scene on foot after speaking with authorities. The accident occurred in front of Bojangles in Aberdeen just before 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The driver of a Nissan sedan was heading north on U.S. Highway 1 when a driver of a Toyota pulled out from the Food Lion shopping center into the path of the Nissan. The impact of the crash spun the Toyota around, and the wreckage left the driver entrapped in her vehicle. The Nissan ended up across the highway and onto the grass in front of Bojangles.
A Nissan car is severely damaged in a two-vehicle accident Thursday evening.
Due to the heavy damage to the vehicles and the entrapment, a second rescue crew was dispatched as well as an additional ambulance. The female driver of the Toyota had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters. She was treated by EMS and transported to the hospital with possible serious injuries.
The male driver of the Nissan was evaluated by EMS but did not require treatment. He initially spoke with police and remained at the scene. Police were alerted by a witness to the accident that he had ran behind Bojangles to hide an object in the bushes and returned to his car before authorities arrived on the scene.
As law enforcement began to search the bushes behind the restaurant, the driver left the scene on foot, and Aberdeen officers pursued the suspect but were unable to locate him at the time of this report. Authorities recovered a handgun from the bushes.
Aberdeen Police are investigating the incident.
Responding to the scene were Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and Aberdeen Police Department.
