Freddy’s is coming to Southern Pines

The Town of Southern Pines approved plans at its agenda meeting on Dec. 14 for Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers. The chain restaurant will be housed at a new 8,209 square foot retail development at the corner of U.S. Highway 15-501 and Murray Hill Road.

The restaurant features thick, frozen custard with a variety of toppings. For its feature meal, the hamburger, it has its own seasoning and uses thinly pressed 100% lean, ground beef with no additives or fillers, according to their website. A full menu may be viewed here.

Construction on the shopping center is scheduled to begin in January. The expected opening date of the restaurant is sometime in the fall.

The town also approved the Architectural Compliance Permit for Rec Room, LLC. The 13,471 square foot building had a drawing of a rear loading door with a dumpster in front of the door and no screening. The drawing and plans have been revised, and the dumpster will be relocated and will have a screening wall.

The Rec Room will be at 750 SW Broad Street and have a large open game room, bar, outdoor seating and a party room. It is a renovation of a grocery store, once an IGA and a Bo’s Grocery.

In other business, the Southern Pines Land and Housing Trust will receive the first payment Dec. 15 from the Town of Southern Pines for the lease of Blanchie Carter Park.

In November, the Town of Southern Pines gave funds toward the purchase of the Southern Pines Primary School by Southern Pines Land Housing and Trust for the use of Blanchie Carter Playground. Due to school board and deed issues, the resale of the playground was made difficult, according to Town Manager Regan Parsons.

A resolution to the town using the playground was made by turning to a 99-year lease option at a one-time rate of $160,000, including town maintenance.

The Southern Pines Land and Housing Trust will provide $1 million in liability insurance coverage for the park, and according to the town’s lease agreement, “shall show the Town as an additional insured as Town’s interest may appear.”
