A home was destroyed by fire Sunday evening just off Aro Road in Southern Pines Sunday evening.
Off duty Cypress Pointe fire members were traveling south on Highway U.S. 1, and off duty Southern Pines fire members were heading north when, at nearly the same point on the highway, they smelled smoke and located the home on fire and immediately called for help.
The single-story residence had flames showing when the fire crews arrived on the scene. There were vehicles in the yard and it was unknown initially if anyone was in the home.
After a sweep of the home, firefighters were able to determine no one was in the residence. The resident of the home was actually a patient in the hospital when the blaze broke out.
Fire crews were able to extinguish the flames within a short period of time, but the home had suffered extensive damage. The one end of the home was completely gutted.
It is unknown what caused the fire, but the Southern Pines Fire Marshal was on the scene and is investigating the cause.
Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and Moore County Sheriff’s Department.
