A man was left in critical condition after a single-vehicle crash Saturday night in Southern Pines. The crash happened near the roundabout at Midland Road and Central Drive shortly after 6:30 p.m.
According to authorities, firefighters arriving on scene found the driver pinned inside the vehicle and cut the doors on the driver’s side to remove him. He was taken to a landing zone at the Southern Pines ball field to be airlifted to Chapel Hill, but the inbound helicopter suffered a bird strike and was forced to abort the flight.
With no other medevac helicopters available within 30 minutes, paramedics transported the man emergently to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital.
An infant was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash but was reportedly in stable condition and uninjured.Â
Southern Pines Police are investigating the cause of the crash, and no other details were available.
Responding agencies included Southern Pines Fire and Rescue, Moore County EMS, and Southern Pines Police.
