Medical event suspected in Pinehurst crash

A man was airlifted in serious condition following a crash in the parking lot of the Truist Bank on Aviemore Court Friday afternoon.

According to authorities, the driver of an SUV had just exited the bank’s drive-through area and turned left when the vehicle suddenly surged forward. The SUV struck a parked Jeep in front of the bank, forcing it over a curb and across the bank’s front entrance before it came to rest.

The SUV, a Chevrolet Tahoe, then accelerated across the grassy area in front of the bank and into the parking lot. It continued almost the length of the parking lot before crashing into a large tree in the wooded area bordering the lot.

The driver was transported to a nearby landing zone and flown to a trauma center in critical condition. Authorities believe he may have suffered a medical event that led to the crash.

The Pinehurst Police Department is investigating the accident.

Responding to the scene were Pinehurst Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and Pinehurst Police.
