Fire crews from Moore and Richmond counties responded shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday to a large fire involving multiple mobile homes off of L.G. Dewitt Road in Rockingham. The mobile homes, which were unoccupied, were located directly behind the Rockingham Dragway.
Initial radio reports indicated that six or seven new mobile homes were on fire, but responders later determined that more than a dozen units may have been damaged. From the roadway, siding could be seen peeling from several structures, with the fire’s heat melting exterior materials. Large areas of grass in the surrounding field were also burned.
As the fire intensified, Richmond County officials requested additional assistance from Moore County, including a tanker, to support aggressive knockdown and firefighting operations. The request was made due to the scale of the fire and the volume of water needed to contain it.
Fire engines entirely surrounded the mobile homes as crews worked to contain and extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and was not released at the scene.
In addition to Richmond County units, assisting departments from Moore County included the Pinebluff and Aberdeen fire departments.
