At every driver license office in North Carolina, an examiner may ask, “Would you like to join the organ donor registry?”
Through the coordinated efforts of the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles and Donate Life North Carolina, five million driver license recipients across the state have graciously decided to become organ donors.
That milestone was recognized today during a ceremony at the State Capitol in Raleigh. NCDMV Commissioner Torre J. Jessup joined other dignitaries to commemorate the unselfish life-saving endeavors by driver license examiners at 113 offices across North Carolina who offer this opportunity to each citizen obtaining or renewing a driver license.
“Of all the people who have signed up for the organ donation registry in North Carolina, 99 percent of them did so at a NCDMV office,” said Commissioner Jessup. “I am proud to represent the 650 driver license examiners across the state in applauding the registration of North Carolina’s five millionth organ donor.”
NCDMV began its effort with Donate Life N.C. to support organ, eye and tissue donations in 1994 and each organ donor’s driver license is recognized with the symbol of a heart on the front of the license.
