Mrs. Wilma H. Ledford, age 96, passed away on Thursday morning, December 14, 2017 at St. Joseph of the Pines Health Center in Southern Pines, North Carolina.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Monday, December 18th in the Mausoleum at Southlawn Memorial Park located at 1911 Birdsong Drive, South Prince George, Virginia, with Pastor Matt Hoole from the Mechanicsville Christian Center officiating.

Mrs. Ledford was born on October 8, 1921 in Haywood County North Carolina to the late Jerry Herman Holder and Artie May Dotson Holder. She grew up in the beautiful mountains of western North Carolina and married her childhood sweetheart, Robert Anderson Ledford on July 19, 1940.

They eventually moved to Virginia, where they raised their family of 3 children. With the busy life of a wife and mother, Wilma’s big dream of going to college fell by the wayside and her new dream was to ensure that each of her children received their college degrees.

This new dream came to fruition when her youngest child received her degree in 1989. Wilma was a hairdresser by trade for many years. Through her work and active church life, she made many lifelong friends.

In her spare time, she loved vegetable and flowering gardening, sewing, and baking where she became well known for her pound cakes and chocolate chip cookies.

Wilma is survived by her two sons, David R. Ledford (Geneva) from Walland, Tennessee and Richard L. Ledford (Mary) from Glenn Allen, Virginia; one daughter, Jean Ledford (Charlie Benizio) from Whispering Pines, North Carolina; three grandchildren, David L. Ledford from London, Kentucky, Jeffrey R. Ledford from Walland, Tennessee; Angela W. Carlon from San Diego, California; 16 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 60 years, Robert A. Ledford, her two brothers Athol Holder and Willard Holder, her sister Joretta Holder Sordelett, and grandson David Whittaker, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in memory of Mrs. Wilma Ledford to St. Joseph of the Pines Foundation at http://www.trinityhealthseniorcommunities.org/foundation or a charity of your choice.
