Obituary for John Thomas Carter, Jr.

John Thomas “Tommy” Carter, Jr., 77, passed away peacefully on the evening of April 12, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Tommy was born on August 21, 1948, in Southern Pines, NC, to John T. Carter, Sr. and Mabel Hartsell Carter. A proud American, he served his country with honor in the United States Army during the Vietnam War where he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his bravery and sacrifice.

Tommy dedicated much of his life to serving others. He worked for Moore County Schools for 30 years and later continued his service at FirstHealth for 20 years. Following his retirement, he moved to Little River, SC.

His commitment to his community was especially evident through more than 40 years of service in public safety. He served with the Town of Biscoe Fire Department, the Aberdeen Rescue Squad, and West End Fire & Rescue Department, where he retired after many years of service. During his time with West End Fire & Rescue, he also served as Assistant Fire Chief and as a member of the Board.

Tommy previously served as an Elder at Jackson Springs Presbyterian Church and was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge of Biscoe #437, where he built lasting friendships and lived out his values of integrity, service, and brotherhood.

Tommy is survived by his devoted wife, Pamela Carter, and his sons, Richard Edward Carter (Nikki), Charles Thomas Carter (Paul), and L. Kyle Rush (Bethany). He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren, Vincent, Emma Rae, Kendyll, Hayden, Jacob, and Blaire, who brought him immense joy.

He is also survived by his mother, Mabel Hartsell Carter, and his sisters, Gail McBride and Barbara Brower. He was preceded in death by his father, John T. Carter, Sr.

Tommy will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his service to his country and community, and the quiet strength and humility with which he lived his life. His warm smile, steady presence, and the way he made everyone around him feel at home will be missed.

A visitation will be held on April 16, 2026 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm , at Boles Funeral Home in Pinehurst, NC. A funeral service will follow on Friday at 2:00 pm, April 17, 2026, at Jackson Springs Presbyterian Church. Burial will take place at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West End Fire & Rescue.

His legacy of service and love will continue to live on in all who knew him.
