Last Sunday, local law enforcement were investigating a potential threat of school violence allegedly made by a Pinecrest High School student on social media.
A short time later that night, the school announced that the Moore County Schools Police and staff met with the student and family to investigate the alleged threats and “do not believe the threat to have been credible.”
However, there was an increased police presence on the school grounds Monday as a precautionary measure.
Pinecrest High School PTSA posted on social media an update from the student’s mother Sunday evening saying that her child is being targeted by bullies. The mother said her child does not have access to a “gun of any kind.” The mother stated that she will “get to the bottom of this vicious rumor.”
Pinecrest High School Principal, Bob Christina, sent out an email to parents of Pinecrest students Friday updating them on the investigation.
“As you are all aware by now, there was an alleged threat made against our school on social media Sunday night. After investigating, it was determined that there was no credible threat to Pinecrest HS. It has been determined that the student’s name who was repeatedly used inappropriately in social media, is as much as victim as anyone,” said Christina. “We are disappointed in the rush to judgement but certainly recognize the concerns given the context of the recent tragedy in Florida. As a result of investigation, students have been suspended and others recommended for long term suspension from school. This behavior in our school will not be tolerated.”
Christina went on to say, “As we move forward, be assured that teachers, staff, school officials, and Moore County Schools Police will ensure the safety of your child and take all precautions necessary. In the coming weeks, we will be adding some additional safety pieces to support this contention.”
“On Tuesday, we will be having short grade level meetings to speak with the student body about bullying, cyber bullying, & social media,” Christina added. “Please know that we will continue to take every precaution to ensure a safe and focused learning environment for all of our students. Thank you for allowing us to work with your young people, and thank you for your support and confidence.”
