Volunteer firefighter wins scholarship

The Whispering Pines Fire Rescue Department (WPFRD) announced volunteer firefighter Mylee Scruggs has been named a recipient of the prestigious Jim Bailey Memorial Scholarship Fund, awarded by the North Carolina State Firefighters’ Association (NCSFA).

The highly competitive NCSFA Scholarship Program opens annually on Jan.1 and concludes on March 15. It recognizes dedicated individuals advancing their education in the fire service or pursuing higher academic degrees. This year, the NCSFA distributed $240,000 statewide to selected high school seniors, volunteer personnel, and career firefighters.

Mylee will utilize the $8,000 NCSFA scholarship toward a bachelor’s degree in marine environmental science at the United States Coast Guard Academy, said the fire department in a news release. Before reporting to the Coast Guard Academy next month, Mylee will graduate from the Moore County High School Fire Academy on June 4 and from Union Pines High School on June 12.

Mylee joined the WPFRD as a volunteer junior firefighter in November 2024. Since that time, Mylee has completed the National Incident Management System 100, 200, 700, and 800 courses, obtained CPR certification, and completed 95% of the classes required to become a state-certified firefighter. In addition, Mylee has completed many hours of in-station training and drills, assisted with numerous community-related fire safety activities, responded to a variety of emergency incidents, and is highly regarded by her fellow firefighters.

When presenting the scholarship award to Mylee, Fire Rescue Chief Rich Lambdin said, “On behalf of the Village and the PFRD, I commend and congratulate you for receiving the NCSFA scholarship and wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors with the Coast Guard.”
