SCC announces Academic Excellence Award winner

The faculty of Sandhills Community College announced the winner of the 2022 Academic Excellence Award. With a 4.0 GPA in the Associate Degree in Nursing program, Hannah York, of Southern Pines, is this year’s winner. The award will be presented to York in front of her peers and SCC staff and faculty at the Student Awards Day ceremony on April 27.

“Not only does she maintain a stellar academic record,” said Department Chair Hannah Altergott, “but Hannah also excels in the clinical setting. She is bright and highly professional, considerate, and kind to everyone with whom she interacts. Hannah is the president of our Sandhills Association of Nursing Students (SANS) and has led projects that benefit the community, despite challenges presented by the pandemic and the significant time commitment nursing school presents. She conducts herself with grace and is a role model to her peers.”

York earned a Bachelor of Sociology from the University of Colorado but was unsure of an adequate profession. She says that through the support and encouragement of her instructors and peers at Sandhills Community College, she is now confident that she has chosen the correct career path.

“Being chosen for this award is humbling and an honor I will forever cherish,” said York. “As a student in the Associate Degree in Nursing program, my classroom and clinical experience have provided me with the tools necessary to provide my patients the highest level of care and compassion. My experience at Sandhills has been filled with challenges and opportunities which have prepared me for my career.

“The nursing faculty and staff have guided and supported me throughout my time at Sandhills Community College. My interactions with faculty and staff have shown their commitment to demonstrating and practicing the core values of integrity, helpfulness, excellence, respect, and opportunity. As I progress through my nursing career, I will always be indebted to the selfless actions of everyone at Sandhills Community College.”

At Sandhills Community College, students with a 4.0 GPA and more than 50 hours completed toward their degree are reviewed and considered eligible for the award. Faculty members are invited to submit a statement of support for a candidate. The list is then narrowed to the finalists with the most substantial faculty support, and a final round of faculty votes determines the award winner.
