Union Pines made its fourth consecutive appearance in the Dual Team Championship match and earned its first championship with a 47-17 win against the Pisgah Bears on Saturday, announced the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) in a press release.
The Vikings won the first seven bouts of the championship match, taking a commanding 31-0 lead, but the Western Regional Champions took three of the next four matches, including two pins from Christian Gibson at 113 pounds and Kane Bryson at 120 pounds.
Union Pines closed out the victory as Keaton Crawford and Joseph Lloyd earned tech fall wins, and Jose Salinas earned a 7-1 decision in the final three bouts.
Union Pines’ Brock Sullivan, at 215 pounds, earned a hard-fought 4-2 decision against Landon Pope and was named the Most Valuable Player for the championship.
“The NCHSAA is committed to recognizing outstanding sportsmanship in each of our State Championship events,” said NCHSAA. “The Association has partnered with the North Carolina Farm Bureau to award a pair of Sportsmanship Awards at each championship event, recognizing players who have demonstrated the ideals of outstanding character and sportsmanship throughout the 2024-25 season. The winners of the 3A Wrestling NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Awards were Dantrell Williams from Union Pines and Kane Bryson from Pisgah.”
