A single-occupant vehicle veered off of U.S. Highway 1 northbound just past the Pennsylvania on-ramp in Southern Pines Wednesday afternoon.
The male driver veered into the grass and went approx 75 feet before rolling over onto the car’s right side in a drainage ditch.
The northbound right lane was closed while Southern Pines Fire Department rescued the driver from the burning car that started in the engine bay.
Firefighters quickly had the fire extinguished and the driver escorted to safety.
The driver declined medical assistance and was escorted from the scene to a Southern Pines Police vehicle for further questioning.
Rockwell towing arrived shortly after to remove the vehicle from the side of the road.
Responding to the scene were the Southern Pines Fire Department and Southern Pines Police.
