The driver of a pickup truck was injured when his truck struck a tree on Midland Road in Southern Pines Tuesday afternoon. The accident happened just past the intersection with Central Drive around 5:30 p.m.
Witnesses to the crash stopped to help the driver. They assisted the driver in getting free from the vehicle and remained with him until help arrived. The injured male was lying beside the truck when emergency crews arrived on the scene.
He was transported to Moore Regional Hospital, in Pinehurst, with what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries.
The driver appeared to be headed towards Southern Pines when he ran off the left hand side of the road and into the median striking a tree. The Dodge Ram 3500 had extensive damage and appeared to be a total loss.
There was a second vehicle involved in the accident, a Cadillac sedan, but it appeared to have no visible damage.
Traffic was backed up in all directions, and Midland Road was shut down to one lane both ways.
Southern Pines Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
