Bottle rockets blasting into the sky, eggs dropping from a fire truck bucket lift, tropical music wafting from a shaved ice truck, and model car races were just a few of the competitive events taking place at Sandhills Community College during FunFest XXVII.

Held on Friday, April 26, FunFest saw 650 middle and high school students, instructors, volunteers, staff, and judges throughout campus in classrooms, auditoriums, dining halls, and outdoors.

2019 was the twenty-seventh year the event was held. A collaborative effort by Sandhills Community College and Moore County Schools Career and Technical Education (CTE), FunFest provides competitive engineering, technology, and business and marketing events for area middle and high school students.

Middle school teams competed against each other in Balsa Wood Bridges, Toothpick Bridges, Balsa Wood Towers, The Alex Cameron Metric 500 Fastest and Coolest Car, Mousetrap Cars, Egg Drops, Bottle Rockets, Rubber Band Airplanes, Digital Multimedia Logo Design, Digital Media Commercials, HTML/CSS and The Idea Challenge.

In addition to all but the Toothpick Bridge and HTML/CSS challenges, high school students also competed in a Digital Media Video Challenge and a Horticulture and Landscape Challenge.

The College offered a FunFair in the gymnasium with SCC departments and programs informing students of opportunities available at Sandhills.

After lunch, the students gathered for an awards ceremony in the gym. NC State Senator Tom McInnis was on hand to greet the students and encourage their interests in engineering, technology, and business. First, second and third place winners were announced in each competition.

West Pine Middle School won the trophy for the Middle School Grand Champion and Union Pines High School was the High School Grand Champion.

Sponsors contributing to FunFest were The Sandhills Community College Foundation, Par 5 Development Group LLC, MCBHA Scholarship Fund, On Course Enterprise LLC, Cascade, Pinetree Animal Hospital, NC One, Town of Robbins, and Sandhills Building Systems.

FunFest XXVIII will be on April 17 in 2020.
