Obituary for David F. Sherrill of Vass

David F. Sherrill, of Vass, NC, died unexpectedly on Thursday, July 6, 2023. 

There will be a celebration of his life held on Saturday August 5, 2023 at Sandhill’s Horticulture Center, 3395 Airport Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374. Please join the family and friends from 11am to 1pm. Service and memory sharing will begin at 11:30. All are free to participate if they choose. 

Dave was born in Hickory, NC and spent his formative years in Asheville, NC. He moved to Stone Mountain, GA for his senior year and graduated high school there. He initially attended NC State as a Zoology major. He then joined the Army’s Military Intelligence spending five of his eight years serving in Korea.

Dave’s life in the Sandhill’s began as a bartender, house painter, and wallpaper hanger.  He finished his education at Sandhill’s Community College (SCC) as an Engineering transfer student and then attended A&T University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Math and Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics.

Dave returned to Sandhill’s, where he spent nineteen years teaching and three years as Math Department Chair, retiring from SCC in 2019. He enjoyed playing golf as long as he could.

He is survived by his wife and fiancée of 38 years, Karen Youngblood of Vass/Lakeview, formerly of Vienna, VA; his son, Joshua Youngblood (Michelle) of Vass/Lakeview, Wilmington, and Hope Mills, NC; his grandson Jackson Youngblood; his mother, Jenny Sherrill of Whispering Pines and Leland, NC; his sister, Karen Sherrill Sanders (Adrian) of Leland, NC; his niece, Jordan Griffith Sanders; his nephews, Ivan and Hank Sanders; his great nieces, Branwen Griffith and Edin Sanders; his great nephew Niko Sanders; and many dear cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father formerly of Hickory, Asheville, and Leland, NC, Jack Sherrill.

Memorial donations can be made in memory of David Sherrill to K9 for Veterans or to the Gary Sinise Foundation.

Dave will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

David Sherrill touched many lives as a teacher, mentor, and friend. He was a special guy and will be sorely missed.
