Obituary James Landis Whitaker II Carthage

Capt. James Landis “Lanny” Whitaker II, 38, of Carthage, passed on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 from injuries sustained from an automobile accident. 

A visitation will be held from 1 to 3 PM at the Carthage Fire and Rescue Department with services beginning at 3:30 PM on Sunday, June 7, 2020. Burial will follow in the Red Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.  

Lanny was born October 22, 1981 in Moore County. He graduated in 2000 from Lee Senior in Sanford later attending Central Carolina Community College earning a degree in Telecommunications. He was currently employed with Windstream Communications. He joined the Cameron Fire Department at the age of 16 and held on to that passion for the rest of his life. After moving to Carthage in 2004 he joined the Carthage Fire Department working as a volunteer and part-time employee obtaining the rank of Captain. He was a loving husband, father, and son who loved his boys more than anything in this world.

He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Melissa Strother Whitaker. His sons, Andrew and Aiden Whitaker of the home; His parents, Crystal Garner and husband Tony of Sanford; his father, James Landis Whitaker of Vass; His father and mother-in-law, Billy and Lisa Strother of Anderson Creek, NC; His grandmother, Juanita Starr of Sanford; A brother-in-law, Billy and Deneasha Strother of Tarboro, NC; Niece and nephew, Jaden Alston and Bryson Strother. Many, many, Aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Orvel Starr, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the State Employees’ Credit Union to assist in the educational scholarships that will be established for his children.
