Peggy Ann Roberts McKellar, 88, of Southern Pines, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 15, 2019.

Born in Greensboro, NC on March 18, 1931, Peggy graduated from Sumner High School in 1949 and St. Leo’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1953.

Peggy’s life’s calling was that of a Registered Nurse, a career of which she was most proud. Her employment ranged from being a nurse at a factory to the sole nurse for a small-town doctor’s office to a charge nurse at a growing hospital.

Wed to Gordon (Boney) McKellar in 1955, Peggy resided for 13 years in Red Springs, NC. The family moved to Southern Pines in 1969 where she began working on Tufts and Jackson Halls at Moore Memorial Hospital. She retired from Moore Regional in 1996.

Peggy enjoyed many class reunions with both her high school and nursing school friends over the years. She and her husband also attended several reunions of the USS Hank; the destroyer Gordon served on during WWII.

She loved to sew and was an accomplished seamstress. Peggy enjoyed cooking and baking and entertained gatherings of family and friends throughout the years. She was a member of the Southern Pines Elks Lodge Does. In her younger days, she enjoyed dancing and playing bridge.

Peggy and Gordon attended First Baptist Church of Southern Pines. In later years they frequented Christ Community Church with their daughter.

In retirement, Peggy enjoyed participation in Christian Women’s Club and the Republican Women’s Club. She took many Bible studies, filling dozens of notebooks from Katherine Caldwell’s studies. She and Gordon attended most of their grandchildren’s baseball games and dance recitals. They spent many weekends and holidays in Wilmington, where they had a second home.

Peggy is survived by her daughter, Karen Manning, and son-in-law, Craig Manning, of Whispering Pines; grandchildren Stephen Manning and Nicole Manning of Denver, Co.; and brother, Donald Roberts of Sunset Beach,NC.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; son, Gordon, Jr.; parents Charlie and Vivian Roberts; and brother David Lee Roberts.

A funeral service for Peggy will be held on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Southern Pines First Baptist Church. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Interment will be at Alloway Cemetery in Red Springs.
