PMC dietitian honored with diabetes care award

On Oct. 27, the North Carolina Diabetes Advisory Council (DAC) held a ceremony to honor heroes in the fight against diabetes. The DAC Awards recognize individuals and organizations who encourage diabetes prevention and self-management through the promotion of eating healthy, being physically active, living tobacco-free, getting adequate sleep, and participating in a diabetes program or adhering to a personalized diabetes treatment plan.

Callie Huneycutt, MS, RD, LDN, Pinehurst Medical Clinic (PMC) registered dietitian, health coach, and wellness team lead, was awarded the NCDAC Hugh Young Diabetes Care Award and Education Specialist Scholarship. The award recognizes and financially supports one deserving diabetes care and education specialist in North Carolina who has made outstanding and long-lasting contributions to diabetes prevention, care, education, and management.

Cara Herring, LCSW, PMC clinical programs manager, recognized Huneycutt’s strong work ethic and commitment to ensuring high-quality patient care. “The NCDAC Hugh Young Diabetes Care Award exhibits the great care patients receive at Pinehurst Medical Clinic,” she said. “It takes a lot of work to receive this level of recognition, and Callie is dedicated to helping diabetic patients live healthier and longer lives, and we are honored to have her on our team.”

Huneycutt has been with PMC for over six years and oversees the wellness department, which provides services to over 2,200 patients annually. PMC’s wellness department serves as an extension of the primary care department consisting of health coaches from various educational backgrounds, registered dietitians, a respiratory therapist, licensed clinical social workers, congestive heart failure (CHF) nurse, and a clinical pharmacist, all chosen to serve patients and their needs with the highest quality of care. Whether it is help with strategies to lose weight, nutritional education, disease-specific resources for diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), CHF, or someone to talk to for emotional health, the team provides individual care to varied populations within the PMC community.

Created in 1988, the DAC partners with stakeholders to reduce the burden of diabetes in North Carolina. The group meets three times each year to promote training, discuss new service priority areas and interventions, foster collaboration, and propose strategies for the prevention and management of diabetes.
