Police standoff in Pinehurst ends peacefully

A Pinehurst resident is safely in custody after barricading himself in his home Monday afternoon. The incident took place on Burning Tree Road, not far from the marina.

His wife and children were safe with authorities while law enforcement attempted to convince the man, a military veteran, into surrendering. Homes around the residence were evacuated by law enforcement, and the area on Burning Tree Road was blocked off by Pinehurst Fire Department and traffic rerouted.

Members of the family’s church and a local veterans organization arrived to support the family and offer assistance. Neighbors gathered down the street and offered kind words about the man and his family.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., law enforcement was able to safely take the man into custody. It is unknown at this time what caused the veteran to take such action, but a law enforcement official said he will now be able to get the help he needs.

This is the second standoff Sandhills Sentinel reported on during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

A nearly four-hour standoff between law enforcement and a man barricaded in a vehicle in Pinehurst ended in suicide on Friday afternoon.

The man was pulled over during a traffic stop on Highway 15-501 while Pinehurst Police attempted to serve warrants for multiple felonies to the 52-year-old Pinehurst man.
