Sheetz convenience store proposed in Carthage

A Sheetz convenience store may come to Carthage. The Carthage Planning Board met Thursday evening to discuss a proposed Sheetz store.

Sheetz is a family-owned company that offers gasoline, made-to-order food, and a drive-thru. The proposed location will be at the Monroe and Glendon-Carthage Road intersection adjacent to Bojangles. The location will be 6,139 square feet and will employ approximately 25 people. It will be open 24 hours.

The location is zoned for retail, so it is a use-by-right, so no rezoning is necessary. There is one residential property located on the parcel.

According to a Sheetz representative at the meeting, they want to be good neighbors. They have offered concessions to minimize the disturbance to their neighbors. The Unified Development Ordinance does not require turning lanes, but the store will provided them to try and reduce traffic disruptions.

North Carolina Department of Transportation is conducting a traffic impact study, but initial studies indicate about 1,500 additional vehicle trips will result from the new location.

Sheetz offer various types of gasoline and will offer diesel for passenger cars. The location will not have truck parking or offer diesel maintenance. There are currently no plans to provide charging stations for electric vehicles.

Sheetz plans to grow to 1,000 stores by 2028, and they see Carthage as a growth market and a great partner. Sheetz also partners with the community in charitable outreaches.

The planning board expressed concern about noise and light pollution and asked for additional buffering for the drive-thru.

This meeting was to give the builder feedback on the initial site plan. Next, the town council will also review the site plan. Once that process is completed, detailed construction plans will be submitted, and if they are approved, construction will begin.
