Another specialist in vascular surgery has joined the team at FirstHealth Vascular & Vein. Glenn Fusonie, M.D., brings 15 years of experience in both traditional and endovascular surgery to the FirstHealth practice, which is staffed by Pinehurst Surgical providers.  He works alongside Clinton Atkinson, M.D., and Paul Vieta, M.D., and certified physician assistants Desek Gibson, Adam Clark and Stephen Bush.

Dr. Fusonie has relocated with his family to Pinehurst from Laconia, N.H., where he worked as a vascular surgeon and held various leadership positions on the medical staff at LRGHealthcare, in the “lakes region” of the state. He treats adults of all ages who have conditions such as aortic aneurysms, blocked arteries and other disorders of the veins and vascular system.

“Treating patients who have vascular disorders is very exciting for me,” he says. “We can help prevent stroke, for example, and save lives. Plus, I enjoy the fact that we follow patients over time, and develop a relationship with them, frequently for life.”

Choosing to be part of this FirstHealth team involved both professional and family factors, he says. Having lived in Albemarle for a brief time years ago, he’s familiar with the region, and he has relatives in South Carolina.

“A colleague made me aware of the stability of FirstHealth as a hospital, and I was excited to learn that Drs. Atkinson and Vieta were looking for another partner,” he says. “Having three surgeons in the practice will allow us to cover the area even better.”

Dr. Fusonie earned his medical degree from the Boston (MA) University School of Medicine, where he also completed an internship in general surgery. He completed a general surgery residency at SUNY Upstate School of Medicine, in Syracuse, NY, and a fellowship in vascular surgery at the University Of Cincinnati College Of Medicine.

His training includes endovascular surgery—using more minimally invasive approaches compared to traditional “open” surgery—for management of several vascular disorders. With his extensive experience, he has trained other physicians to use these techniques. He has also been published in leading medical journals.

Dr. Fusonie and his wife, Sara, are parents to third-graders Paige and Parker. He is active in sports, including hockey, baseball, biking, fishing and golf, and has served as a youth league coach.
