Pinecrest High School announced Tuesday they lost 440 students’ ACT scores. Juniors who  took the test on Feb. 20 and March 13 will now have to retake the exams.

Pinecrest Principal Stefanie Phillips announced the news in a ConnectED message.

School officials said the missing tests were the result of “human error.”

“School and district officials have conducted a thorough investigation and appropriate personnel action has been taken,” said Phillips.

Pinecrest found out the tests weren’t submitted when ACT officials said they hadn’t received the answer sheets, according to Moore County Schools Director of Communications Catherine Murphy.

The school said on social media they coordinated a search for the answer sheets when they found out the scores were never turned into ACT.

“We have extensively searched the school, interviewed staff and reviewed video footage to try and determine what happened to the answer sheets. We have not been able to locate them and at this point must conclude that they were discarded.”

Pinecrest also stated on social media they are implementing a team to make sure a mistake like this never happens again.

“The district is assembling a “fire team” that will review and re-evaluate all security, processes and protocols for how the school administers non-EOC/EOG tests. We will be implementing recommendations from the team for the 2019-20 school year.”

Moore County Schools are working with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and is in the process of finalizing a plan to retest the students in the fall. The makeup tests will be at no cost to the students.

The ACT exam is administered to all juniors, and the results can be used for college admission.

Phillips went on to say “I deeply regret the situation and apologize to the entire rising senior class.”
