Aberdeen officers serve at Texas Roadhouse for Special Olympics Fundraiser

A meal at Texas Roadhouse in July will help support local athletes participating in Special Olympics North Carolina.

The Aberdeen Police Department is partnering with the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics for its annual Tip-A-Cop fundraiser on July 16 from 5 to 9 p.m.

During the event, law enforcement officers and several local Special Olympics North Carolina athletes will assist restaurant staff by greeting guests and helping raise donations for the organization.

“Every plate, every tip, and every conversation helps make a difference,” writes Shannon Blackburn, investigations/operations captain with the APD. “So bring the family, bring your appetite, and come support a great cause.”

Customers can support the fundraiser by dining at Texas Roadhouse during the event and either presenting the event flyer, mentioning Tip-A-Cop, or letting their server know they are there to support Special Olympics North Carolina. For those who do, a donation equal to 10% of their meal will be added to the evening’s fundraising total.

In addition to those donations, officers participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run will be collecting contributions throughout the evening to benefit Special Olympics North Carolina.

The organization provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Founded in 1970, Special Olympics North Carolina has grown from its first state games with 400 participants into one of the largest Special Olympics programs in the world. Today, the organization serves nearly 40,000 athletes across the state through training and competition in 20 Olympic-style sports.

Athletes typically train for at least eight weeks before competition, with one to two practices each week. Eligible participants can begin competing at age 8, with no upper age limit.

Beyond athletics, the organization offers “leadership, health, and community engagement programs” for athletes and their families.

Local diners are encouraged to attend the July 16 event, enjoy dinner, and help support local athletes through an evening of food and fundraising.
