Aberdeen teen raising funds for Eagle Scout Service Project

Jacob Seebode has raised $400 for his Eagle Scout project and is hoping for more donations. He needs a total of $650 to paint the fence surrounding Dunrovin Exotic Animal Rescue and to install a 10-foot by 10-foot animal pen in Vass.

The existing fence is a mix of tropical colors and is flaking off.

The new paint theme will blend with the exotic plants and jungle atmosphere.

Seebode said the first weekend, a team of scouts and his artist friends will apply the base coat of jungle green and install the animal pen. The second weekend, they will paint cattails on the fence near the pond and paint bugs and reptiles to accent other areas.

“Any donations over go to the park for food and enclosures,” Seebode said.

Seebode has been a scout since he moved here from Augusta, Georgia when he was in fifth grade. He has been a Senior Patrol Leader Scout for almost two years and helps plan trips and oversees his troop.

He plans to attend North Carolina State University and major in zoology with a minor in environmental education.

A scout must earn 21 merit badges on the journey to Eagle Scout status, which helps with college entrance, according to Magellan College Counseling. Scouts learn to be team leaders, team players and experience hardships, such as asking strangers for money to complete projects. These experiences are helpful for college entrance essays. It shows the scout is a worker.

Seebode works at Dunrovin Country Store and said he enjoys the animals. The rescue has a Wallaby, a type of kangaroo, rescued from a North Carolina breeder. It has a pair of arctic foxes, a vervet monkey, and 176 birds.

He lives in Aberdeen with his parents, Teresa and David Brown, a younger brother, Corbin, and two stepbrothers, Austin and Hunter.
