Branching out: Tactical Trees NC tackles Moore County tree lines

In just over a year, Tactical Trees NC has taken root as a trusted name in arboriculture in the Sandhills. Whether you’re looking to prune, remove, or simply care for your trees, you can ‘leaf’ it to Tactical Trees NC to get the job done right.

The Tactical Trees team came together naturally. Andrew Boyd, originally from Michigan, spent 10 years in software engineering and cybersecurity before going out on a limb and starting a tree service in 2019, which he built from the ground up.

After moving his family to Southern Pines in 2023, Andrew connected with Jacob Zedaker of Pinebluff and Kevin Losee of Aberdeen through church. Both Zedaker and Losee are former Air Force SERE instructors and longtime co-owners of Tactical Lawn Solutions.

Realizing their shared know-how, the trio joined forces and branched out to launch Tactical Trees NC in June 2023. They were later joined by Dave Johnson and Geoffrey Andrian, two Army veterans and ground crew members (though Geoffrey is an “aspiring climber.”)

“We all love hard work, caring for trees, and serving our customers,” Andrew explained, “and we love helping them protect their homes and families.”

At its core, the company thrives on a simple principle: hard work. “In all toil there is profit,” Andrew said, referencing Proverbs 14:23.

Now, Tactical Trees NC serves the Sandhills region with a comprehensive suite of tree care services, including tree removal, pruning, soil amendments, and cabling. They additionally prioritize preserving and maintaining tree health, with two ISA Certified Arborists on staff to ensure the highest standards of care.

Andrew feels this personalized, professional standard of care sets Tactical Trees NC apart.

“We talk with the customer and do our best to understand their overall goals; sometimes people want to keep a tree, but it appears unhealthy, or don’t know it can be pruned or cabled,” he explained. “Depending on their goals, we tailor an estimate and suite of services to help get to their desired vision.”

However, the Tactical Trees team always ensures that safety comes first—not just for themselves but for clients and their properties, too. The team adheres to strict safety standards, employs proper personal protective equipment, and regularly inspects their gear. Communication systems in their helmets help ensure safety across job sites.

“We work to be appropriately educated on the various problems that can arise in tree work, which can involve a lot of information to sift through,” Andrew said. “We also seek the best talent we can find to perform the work. This can be very challenging at times, but we work hard to take care of everyone that works for us and to teach them to do the job safely and efficiently.”

Recently, Tactical Trees has been assisting with cleanup efforts in the wake of Hurricane Helene, which struck Western North Carolina in late September.

“As a business, we have gone to—and continue to go to—Western NC to deliver supplies and help get trees off of homes from Hurricane Helene,” Andrew recounted.

In storm damage situations, the company prioritizes hazardous conditions, striving to respond within 24 hours to provide estimates and maintain clear communication with clients throughout the process.
