Crash takes out power pole on Highway 1

A man escaped injury Thursday afternoon when his car hit a power pole in Aberdeen. Units were dispatched around 3:30 p.m. to the single-vehicle accident in the area of Elm Street and U.S. Highway 1 southbound.

Crews arrived on scene to find the driver of a black Mercury passenger car had lost control and crashed into a power pole. The impact severed the pole completely in half, and the car kept rolling down the sidewalk narrowly missing two more power poles before coming to a stop. The vehicle suffered moderate front end damage. The driver refused treatment.

One southbound lane of U.S. Highway 1 was shut down while the vehicle was removed by Rockwell Towing and remained shut down for an extended period of time while a power crew could make repairs.

An additional accident occurred less than a quarter-mile north in one of the southbound lanes in the area of Aberdeen Fire Department after units had arrived at the first accident. One lane was also shut down there while crews worked that scene and the vehicles could be removed.

Responding to the accident were Aberdeen Fire Department, Aberdeen Police, Moore County EMS and Rockwell Towing.
