Crews respond to two rollovers in two hours

Less than two hours after a rollover accident shut down one lane of U.S. Highway 1 near Southern Pines, a second rollover shut down a southbound lane of U.S. Highway 1 near Vass. The second accident involving a single vehicle happened on northbound U.S. Highway 1 at the intersection with Grant Road just after 6 p.m.

According to authorities on scene, a Chrysler 200 traveling northbound from Southern Pines had been weaving all over the road, crossing the centerline multiple times. Suddenly, the vehicle sped up and went off the road, but the driver overcorrected and flipped the car into the median just before the turnaround at Grant Road.

The female driver was the only occupant and is believed to have suffered from a medical issue causing her to wreck. She was transported to Moore Regional Hospital.

Evening traffic was slowed down to a crawl for a short time while crews worked the scene, and the vehicle was removed.
