Fire sends man to hospital

A person was sent to the hospital after his Southern Pines home caught on fire Sunday. The fire occurred at a single-story home in the 600 block of South Hardin Street around 7:30 a.m.

All five residents of the home were outside when fire crews arrived within minutes. Southern Pines Fire Chief Mike Cameron said smoke and flames were visible when they arrived.

Southern Pines Fire Department aggressively attacked the fire with Aberdeen, Pinehurst, and Whispering Pines units. Although the fire was rapidly extinguished, the house incurred considerable damage.

Cameron said the man was taken to the hospital due to smoke inhalation, but his condition was not life-threatening. The Moore County Red Cross is assisting the residents.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
