A man was airlifted to a trauma center after an accident on Niagara-Carthage Road near Westview Road Sunday at approximately 11:25 Sunday morning.

The driver of a Nissan sedan ran off the left side of the road hitting a mailbox and then crashed into the woods.  A near-by resident witnessed the mailbox being struck and ran down to the road to find the vehicle tangled in the trees and called 911. The man, believed to be in his 50’s, was pinned in the vehicle and had to be cut from the car by emergency crews utilizing heavy duty hydraulic tools. Once extricated, he was transported by Moore County EMS to a landing zone in a field just across the bridge on Niagara- Carthage Road where he was picked up by a medical helicopter from UNC. The driver suffered extensive life-threatening injuries in the accident.

Responding to the scene were Carthage Fire & Rescue, Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue, Carthage Police Department, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, and the NC State Highway Patrol.

According to officials, this was the fifth person to be airlifted from accidents in Moore County this week.
